STUDY QUESTIONS
1. What was the main etiology for the reoccurrence of chalazia in this case?
2. What areas should be focused on regarding the care for this case?
Answers
1. The main etiology for the reoccurrence of chalazia was due to long-term consumption of spicy and sweet food causing damp heat congestion in the spleen and stomach. Heat transformed dampness into phlegm and caused phlegm-heat congestion. Phlegm-heat congestion travelled upward to block the collaterals in the eyelid causing congestion of qi, blood, phlegm and dampness, hence forming a mass inside the eyelid.
2. The patient should be educated to improve poor eating habits in order to prevent the reoccurrence of this condition. Warm moist compresses should be applied to the area 24 hours post surgery. If the size of the induration remains small, local compresses should be used more extensively in order to let the induration dissipate on its own.
