Constructing Bridges of Connectivity between Peking University and the World
[Malaysia] Nai Chen Huang(President of Peking University Alumni Association of Malaysia)
Founded in 2013, Peking University Alumni Association of Malaysia(PKUAAM)remains a fledging organization within the university's broader alumni network. As we commemorate our 10th anniversary, we do so with a sense of modesty, yet with full appreciation for the positive societal impact accomplished through the support of our alma mater's faculty and various societal benefactors. This juncture presents an opportunity to present our decade-long progress and to convey our heartfelt gratitude to both our alma mater and the wider community.
The influx of Malaysian students at Peking University has remarkably grown from a mere handful in the year 2000 to a robust community of over two hundred today. Parallell, our alumni association has evolved from a small group of about ten to a formidable assembly of hundreds. While we may represent the size of a millet grain amidst the vast ocean of our global alumni network, the strides we have made are a testament to the enduring commitment and concerted efforts of PKUAAM. Upholding the principles of “integrity and innovation”instilled by our alma mater, our alumni association has remained steadfast in its grand pursuit of fostering “diversity and inclusivity, appreciating the beauty of one another”.Our activities spanned from nurturing alumni connections and fellowship to championing societal and educational development, striving to establish bridges for amicable exchange and cooperation between Peking University and our Malaysian society.
In the past ten years, our alumni association has zealously facilitated interactions between Peking University and various Malaysian sectors, particularly in the realms of politics, economy, culture, and education. We have diligently worked to improve inter-racial and cultural understanding, serving as a bridge for meaningful dialogue. Fortunately, our endeavors have not gone unnoticed, receiving recognition from both our alma mater and various stakeholders, notably with the conferral of the Outstanding Alumni Organization of Peking University in 2019.
I first enrolled in the School of Economics at Peking University in 1995, becoming one of the first batches of pioneer Malaysian students of a new era. This educational journey was a blend of excitement and novelty for Malaysian students at that time. We had to explore everything from scratch—from enrolling at Peking University on the first day to attending classes, and to the intricacies of day-to-day living. Perhaps because of this, we cherish every moment of our study abroad experience. Actually because of this, the significant rise in Malaysian student enrolment at Peking University today amplifies our sense of pride and excitement.
Since 2011, the number of Malaysian alumni of Peking University has grown significantly, many of whom have established their careers in Malaysian cultural and educational sectors. The surge in student admissions post-2009, with more than ten Malaysian students admitted to Peking University each year with expanded educational opportunities, laid the foundational groundwork for the establishment and growth of Malaysian alumni association. After about a year of discussion, during the Spring Festival in 2012, we organized an alumni gathering at the Sek Yuen Restaurant, located in Pudu, Kuala Lumpur, which included me, Chiam Yuan Tuan, Tan Keng Kang, Young Fuyee, Khoo Kiak Uei, and Seow Voon Ping. There we raised a toast together and set our hearts to establish an alumni association in Malaysia. We jokingly refer to this event as the “Pudu Uprising”, a precious memory that encapsulates our genuine bond and friendship.
In its early stages, the association grappled with challenges stemming from limited membership, nascent experience, and scarce resources. Thankfully, with unwavering support from our alma mater, faculty members, staff, and the Malaysian community at large, we managed to initiate and carry out various activities. We owe a debt of gratitude to individuals such as Dato'Lim Seng Kok, a prominent Malaysian builder, managing director of GM Klang Wholesale City Malaysia, who not only provided the premises for our “clubhouse” but also frequently sponsored our social activities. Additionally, we extend our thanks to three esteemed figures within the Malaysian Chinese community:the late Professor Dato' Quek Suan Hiang, former chairman of the Dong Zong;Tan Kai Hee, founder of the Hai-O Group;and Datuk Dr.Yeoh Tiong Lay, founder of the YTL Corporation and permanent honorary chairman of the Hin Hua High School in Klang. Their social status and network were instrumental in expanding our alumni association's outreach. For instance, Mr.Tan Kai Hee personally led representatives to the Embassy of China in Malaysia for discussions, facilitating an eventful breakthrough in organizing the first Boya Forum in 2016. Equally important was the tremendous support from Peking University, notably the visits of Dean Hai Wen and President Lin Jianhua to Malaysia in 2016, and the participation of Professor Lin Yifu and Chairman Zhu Shanlu in the first Boya Forum significantly boosted our profile and social impact within Malaysia's political, economic, cultural, and educational spheres. In the same year, our alumni association co-organized the first Malaysia-China Islamic and Confucian Youth Cultural Exchange Summit, supported by influential leaders from both China and Malaysia. We remain deeply grateful for this support, as we're reminded that “virtue is never alone;we need our neighbors”.
It is precisely due to the selfless spirit and invaluable contributions of these mentors and benefactors that our alumni association has achieved its current growth. They “acted without any expectations and achieving without dwelling in accomplishment”.“Success need not come from individual self”, this ethos has been the guiding light of our alumni association, firmly entrenched in our mission of “building bridges”. Whether it is connecting Peking University with Malaysian students, alumni with society, or linking up faculty with Malaysian cultural and educational groups, the alumni association has always been dedicated to maintaining bridges of friendship, exchanges and collaboration. Simultaneously, we remain cognizant that the alumni themselves are the lifeblood of the association, and the alumni association serves as a spiritual home for them. Our fundamental role is to foster inter-generational bridges.
This was the original intention behind the founding of our alumni association and remains our significant mission after a decade. For each graduate, our four years of academic pursuit at Peking University unlocked gateways towards the world, and now, the alumni association endeavors to further facilitate exchanges between Peking University and the world. We deeply recognize that constructing such bridges necessitates robust pillars of support at both ends—Peking University on one side, and Malaysian society on the other. These twin pillars have been the bedrock of our alumni association's growth and development over the past decade. This 10th anniversary special edition is not a project of self-aggrandizement, but a celebration of our journey. Despite being a young and evolving organization within the global alumni network, we are ready to shine and gradually unfold our petals, as the saying goes, “in a forest of competing colors, the southern branch bears many flowers”, thus we picked “Southern Branch Evermore Blooms” as the title for this special edition, encapsulating our aspirations.
Indeed, historical awareness is an important basis for present and future growth. The deep-rooted connection between Peking University and Malaysian society is built upon the inspirational deeds of figures like Ku Hung-ming, Wu Lien-teh, Guan Zhenmin, and Lee Kah Yeow, whose spirit and thoughts are the driving force that propels us forward. I was once blessed to have the opportunity to listen to Professor Quek Suan Hiang, the founding advisor of the alumni association, recount his unique experiences of studying at Peking University back in the forties and fifties of the 2020 century, during a time of grand tumultuous change in Chinese history. His vivid storytelling ignited endless imagination. In following the path laid by our predecessors, our generation should not only “walk in their footsteps” but also “carry this torch forward”.
From the perspective of our alumni association's strategic planning, this special edition is more than a retrospective of the past decade;it is a blueprint for our future endeavors. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we have launched several developmental plans, including “Friends of Peking University Club”“Cultural and Educational Fund” and “Nanyang PKU Alumni”.These initiatives are central to our future focus. In an era marked by increasing polarization along generational and regional lines, we firmly believe that dialogue and exchange to promote mutual understanding and compassion are the only way within the global community, paving the way for the future. In a world that necessitates bridges across racial groups, national boundaries, and cultural divides, our alumni association is committed to engineering these connections, methodically building, brick by brick, a cooperative bridge that spans Malaysian and Chinese societies, and further solidifying the bond between Peking University and the world.
